TWICE
In 2017, Twice, the girl-group that’s under the auspices of JYP Entertainment, was invited on the varety show Weekly Idol. As is common in episodes of Weekly Idol, they were challenged to do the choreography of their new song, and if any of the members made any mistakes, then that member would be subject to punishment, I.e., their head would be beaten by the host with a plastic hammer. All the members did a dance according to the music instructions played by the Weekly Idol‘s staff, except Jihyo. She was given a free pass in the challenge because she got injured. Jihyo and the two hosts became the judges who watched each member’s movements one by one, to see whether they did something wrong or not. On the first part of the dance for “Signal,” which was their newest single at that time, they danced with powerful confidence, and with the right moves. Then, during another part of the song, the judges caught Tzuyu and Chaeyoung, who looked confused and misplaced. The music was stopped by the judges, and Tzuyu and Chaeyoung was questioned about their mistakes, but Tzuyu admitted that the one who made a mistake was Chaeyoung. While the hosts were talking to the member, they said, “I’ve never hit someone as young as a high school student.” Dahyun suddenly interrupted the conversation, saying, “Then, I’m the oldest member of the School Meal Club“. The hosts asked her to come forward to receive the punishment, because she was willing to be punished in order to protect the maknae (Tzuyu and Chaeyoung). The hosts wanted to show Dahyun how the host would hit her head with the hammer, and he gave her a strong hit that made her face startle abysmally. Other funny moments were when Jungyeon got punishment because she did got misplaced from the “TT” song choreography. Before she would be hit by the host, she was allowed to ask a question, and she looked for someone who wanted to be her volunteer by promising she would give her phone number to the volunteer, but no one wants to be her volunteer and she had to undergo her punishment with the smasher. But when Momo got the punishment during “OOH-AAH”, it turned out there was someone who wanted to be her volunteer, and, instead, the person would run “a day with Momo”. Jungyeon protested and said, “Hold on, you’re embarrassing me,” to the host. The host replied with, “They say, they don’t want your number,” and it made everyone laugh. BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK debuted in 2016 with their first single, “BOOMBAYAH”, and shortly afterwards they released “Playing With Fire”, as their second single album, Square Two, the same year. They did a promotion in all the programs, one of which was Weekly Idol. Just like the others, they had to do a Random Play Dance challenge on the program in episode 277. Firstly, they played their most recent song at that time, “Playing With Fire”, and everything was fine. But the song played twice, and Jisoo and Jennie seem to collide, and Jennie didn’t have space to move forward for her part. The MC cornered Jisoo for making a mistake, and Jisoo defended herself by saying Jennie was the only one to make mistakes, not herself. Jennie admitted it and had to receive out the punishment. Before her head got knocked by the toy hammer, Jisoo said that Jennie would shout “AHHH“, and feel the pain when anyone just touched her. Then, the MC hit Jennie slowly and she screamed, but the MC said that she was just acting to avoid the punishment. Finally, Jenny was willing to carry out her punishment, but when her head was hit, Jennie laughed hard and said that it felt good. She said that she must share that amazing feeling with the other members. After Jennie, Rose also got the punishment, all because Jennie screamed and revealed that Rose made a mistake during “Whistle”. Jennie’s eyes got sharper because she was punished, and she wanted to share her feeling with the other BLACKPINK members. When Rose got her punishment, everyone said “WOAAH“, and Rose said “It was amazing! Everything was white!” It made everyone laugh, and the MC said that the studio was always white.
On episode 310 in Weekly Idol, which was aired in 2017, BLACKPINK joined the Random Play Dance challenge with their newest song, “As If It’s Your Last”, and their other songs. In the middle of “BOOMBAYAH”, Jisoo was noticed by MC for making a mistake with Lisa. Jisoo was accused, and she said that her position was correct, but Lisa was too close to that position. Jennie and Rose said that they were the ones who made mistakes, but the MC didn’t see their mistake as a mistake. Jisoo kept defending herself, saying that Lisa should be at the corner.
Red Velvet
Red Velvet comes to Weekly Idol in every promotion for their new songs, such as in 2016, in their comeback with the song “Russian Roulette” as the main track. In the Random Play Dance segment, the members were challenged to dance their latest choreography, which is the song that is their comeback song. Red Velvet was still trying to remember their latest dance moves, but then the song changed to “Dumb Dumb”, and they had to recall the dance moves for that song. Red Velvet danced it with random song, but apparently Seulgi looked confused and she was very busy pacing up and down every turn of the song. That made the MC pay attention to her, and Seulgi made an excuse that she did nothing wrong and asked for a chance to repeat it once more. Seulgi carried on to keep doing it every time the songs changed, and this made the fans laugh because the ‘main dancer’ was often the one who made mistakes. After “Dumb Dumb”, then “Ice Cream Cake” started to play. Joy turned out to be misplaced, and Yeri pushed her with the code that her position is at the edge. Yeri’s way of helping Joy is fairly funny, because she pushed Joy until she seemed to bounce slightly, and Yeri’s face remained focused on her dance moves. As said before, Seulgi was always confused by her position in every song. When “Happiness” was played, the funny moment came when Yeri, Seulgi, and Wendy had to danced on equal. It made Wendy get squeezed, because she got pushed by Yeri and Seulgi on the left and right side. As usual, Seulgi asked for one more chance to dance it, and the MC chose not to allow it. It wasn’t just Seulgi who made everyone laugh; Wendy could also make everyone laugh. When they danced to “Dumb Dumb”, here ring was stuck in the net stocking that she was wearing, and finally they stopped the dance to laugh out loud including, Heechul and EXID’s Hani, who were the MCs.
